When Alexander Graced the Table by Alexander Smalls and Denene Miller; illustrated Frank Morrison
I love Frank Morrison’s illustrations and he really did Alexander Smalls’ story justice. My favorite image is Alexander’s dad inspecting his favorite lemon pie. It is a hilariously, classic dad pose.
This is a story full of family, love and cooking. Young Alexander trains in the kitchen with his mama and with his grandpa in obtaining fresh ingredients. He gets his chance to cook his own first dish when his mother is too tired to cook one night. His pork and beans are a success but he really wants to impress is dad with his cooking.
I loved this inspirational childhood story of Chef Alexander Smalls. And it’s accompanied with a special recipe at the end for you to try on your own.
The Secret of George Washington Carver by Gene Barrett’s; illustrated by Frank Morrison
Looking for a book to inspire you for Earth Day? George Washington Carver was an environmentalist whose research and science helped rehabilitate the soil in the South. Beginning with his famous speech in front of Congress explaining the the impact peanuts could have as a new crop, this book tells the story of how George began his interest in nature.
In solitude, he grew a secret garden that he learned to care for and cultivate through experimentation and trial and error by himself as a child. His garden, where he grew flowers instead of the recommended food, was where he nurtured his own curiosity of nature.
Through beautiful imagery this story is spread through out Carver’s life before he was famous and after. It touches base on his hard fought education and his life as a scientist and environmentalist.
