With a simple, witty story and free-spirited illustrations, Peter H. Reynolds entices even the stubbornly uncreative among us to make a mark — and follow where it takes us.

Her teacher smiled. "Just make a mark and see where it takes you."

Art class is over, but Vashti is sitting glued to her chair in front of a blank piece of paper. The words of her teacher are a gentle invitation to express herself. But Vashti can’t draw - she’s no artist. To prove her point, Vashti jabs at a blank sheet of paper to make an unremarkable and angry mark. "There!" she says.

That one little dot marks the beginning of Vashti’s journey of surprise and self-discovery. That special moment is the core of Peter H. Reynolds’s delicate fable about the creative spirit in all of us.

I was going to save this post for Tuesday, but as a parent of elementary age kids I felt it was my duty to post it today just in case you forgot that the school asked your child to dress up in a polka dot inspired outfit for Tuesday. What is Tuesday, September 15, you ask?

It’s International Dot Day!

Now, for everyone who forgot this, you have the rest of today and tomorrow to get your kid some gear if you decide to participate. You’re welcome! We have to look out for one another. Lol

I’d like to thank Candlewick Press for sending me the newly release dot-shaped collector’s edition of The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. This is a quick and enjoyable story about creativity, self-expression and learning to be confident  in yourself. Sometimes we nee someone to give us a “little push” into becoming confident in ourselves. There may be a skill or task that we just don’t think we can do and/or we refuse to try. But this story is about starting where you are and going from there. It also shows the power of speaking positivity and confidence into someone’s life.

This special edition is a great gift for your child’s Art and/or Reading teacher.

Parent/Caretaker Tip: If your school does an activity for International Dot Day, read the book with your child at home too! Have a discussion with your child about how they view their own creativity, self-confidence and self-expression. You could even make your own dot art together!
