In the latest book from the Your Magic Backpack series by Jessica Sinarski, Hello, Anxiety follows the story of Destiny Davis and the huge book of anxiety that has been weighing her down.
There are more than a few of us dealing with some major anxiety about life lately. This is a great book to read with your child who may be witnessing your anxiety and/or feeling anxious about things in their own life. Destiny’s father helps her by sharing his own struggles with anxiety when he was growing up. He also helps Destiny unpack the brain science behind why she might start feeling anxious.
I love the tips inserted throughout Hello, Anxiety on dealing with anxious thinking. It’s important to point out that having a full toolkit of coping strategies when dealing with anxiety is important. For example, while the timer technique that Destiny’s father shares works in one situation, her mother has to show her a different technique to deal with anxious thinking at night.
There are also statements and bookmarks throughout that a child can repeat to help calm themselves. I highly recommend the accompanying resource bundle. It has the suggestions from the book like the breathing technique and the bookmarks. It also has additional activities and discussion questions that kids will love.
This is a great series to use with children. It really helps kids unpack the scary feelings and then gives them ways to deal not suppress them. There are also tips at the end of the book that you can practice together with your young reader.
