Celebrate the life of the extraordinary civil and human rights activist Coretta Scott King with this picture book adaptation of her critically acclaimed adult memoir.

This is the autobiography of Coretta Scott King––wife of Martin Luther King, Jr.; founder of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change (the King Center); architect of the MLK, Jr. legacy; and global leader in movements for civil and human rights as well as peace. Learn about how a girl born in the segregated deep south became a global leader at the forefront of the peace movement and an unforgettable champion of social change.

Resilience, bravery, and joy lie at the center of this timeless story about fighting for justice against all odds.

Coretta: The Autobiography of Mrs. Coretta Scott King written by Coretta Scott King with the Reverend Dr. Barbara Reynolds is a wonderful new picture book that will quickly become a Black History classic. This children’s book is pulled from her adult memoir, Coretta: My Life, My Legacy, My Love.

The book takes you from Coretta’s childhood to her life after her husband, Dr. King, was assassinated. It discusses her feelings about her husband’s work and her own work as an activist. Between the art and Mrs. King’s story, you will find yourself drawn into her story learning more than you thought you knew about her.

Beautiful Artwork

If you don’t know about the brilliant artist Ekua Holmes, you need to check out her work. She illustrated Coretta: The Autobiography of Mrs. Coretta Scott King and created art for Renee Watson’s recent book Black Girl You Are Atlas.  Her artwork in Coretta is amazing! Her art method is mixed media collage. Looking at the artwork in this book is like walking through an art exhibit. It is awe inspiring.

Try Pairing It With the Audiobook Too!

If you have a young reader, I also recommend checking out the audiobook narrated by January LaVoy. I received an early audiobook copy from and it was awesome. It includes music and sound effects that match the story being told.
