Friday Night Highlights: Spooky Season Prep & A Mama Memoir

Posted August 19, 2022 by Richetta in Friday Night Highlights / 0 Comments

It’s been a while since I’ve written a Friday Night Highlights post. But I’ve missed it, so here we are just in time to start prepping for Spooky Season!

The Weight of Blood by Tiffany D. Jackson

I just finished reading this YA horror novel and I’m ready to read it again. I’m thinking of planning my re-read with a viewing of the movie Carrie just so I can have some fun with comparing and contrasting the two. This book was so good that I feel like I got sucked into a vortex with the plot. This book has lots of layers for you to think about that include the consequences of white-passing, racism, and bullying.

Bonnie deserved better y’all

Tell me you didn’t immediately think of The Craft when you saw the cover of this book. But while it’s got the look it’s not giving me those vibes, meaning so-called friends that eventually turn on each other after a taste of power. Nope! I’m liking the vibe of these super smart witches named the Red Three who invite a “baby witch” into their crew as they try to break the curse of The Haunting Season. These girls did not come to play games! They are at the top of their class and superb in witchy skill level. I’m about 100 pages in and curious about what Iris, the death witch is going to find out about breaking the curse. There are a bunch of POVs so I’ve been trying to keep track of that. However multiple POV is kind of my jam.

Ain’t That a Mother by Adiba Nelson

This was my reaction to the story of how Adiba finds out her fiance is actually married.

I’ve been listening to this memoir and it is both heartbreaking and humorous. Ms. Nelson has a potty mouth too lol! I mean if you didn’t pick that up from the title… She tells the story of how she became a mother. But she doesn’t shy away from the difficult parts – her pregnancy was unexpected, the father of her child is married and she didn’t know it, she suffered severe postpartum depression and her baby was born with special needs. Those are just the parts I’ve gotten too. My husband keeps giving me the side eye because of my constant “He did what?!”, “Hold up! You’re lyin!” and “Girl, no!!!”

Friday Night Highlights is a quick Friday evening post featuring anecdotes and highlights of my current reads of the week. If you feel inspired, it’s the perfect time to grab a new book for your next weekend read.
