Anxiety About Scary Things
Whether or not you celebrate Halloween, you may have a child who gets anxious about that day. It’s hard to avoid when Halloween decorations start popping up everywhere you look, in grocery stores, on front lawns and TV ads. 364 Days Until Halloween addresses the fear and anxiety that some children associate with Halloween.
Finding a Light in the Darkness
Through the use of clever rhyming, we follow Kai throughout each month of the calendar year as he laments and dreads the approach of Halloween. The beautiful illustrations show a fretful Kai as his family celebrates various seasons and holidays. When the big day finally arrives, Kai stumbles upon a pumpkin with no top. The heartwarming interaction that occurs helps Kai get over his fears and to stand in a place of light even though he is afraid of the darkness that can be connected to Halloween.
Support for Educators & Caretakers
This is a great book for any parent to read with their child to discuss any fear or anxiousness they might have surrounding the celebration of Halloween. The rhyming and illustrations make it a great read aloud. The recommended age is for 4-10 year olds. I love that there are tips at the end of the book to support parents and caretakers with helping their child cope with their anxiety. The National Center for Youth Issues also has a wonderful resource bundle to accompany the book. The activities coincide with both the story and the tips at the end. It comes as a PDF and is great for both parents, caretakers, counselors and teachers. I highly recommend it!
