Especially for Louis, who can't seem to control himself when he gets the urge to move at the wrong time and situation.
My knees start itching.
My toes start twitching.
My skin gets jumpy.
Others get grumpy.
Louis' mom comes to the rescue by teaching him techniques to help keep his inner itching, twitching and jumping to be a verb in check.
A positive resource for anyone dealing with ADHD or challenged by someone who has ADHD.
Kids often get the wiggles. But some kids have a harder time than others with dealing with them. It’s Hard to Be a Verb! By Julia Cook, illustrated by Carrie Hartman is a very positive story about a child struggling to manage everyday activities with his ADHD. I highlight the term positive because even the book’s title is supportive. Oftentimes having ADHD as a child can be frustrating for you and for your caretakers. But this book frames ADHD in a positive light. It’s about accepting who you are, but knowing there are areas you have to improve on.
Louis knows that he moves around more often than not. He knows he is always in motion and that being a “verb” is challenging. He has a very supportive mom who teaches him some new strategies to help him focus on what is important at the moment instead of getting distracted by things that can wait. This is a great read aloud for a parent or caretaker and a child with ADHD. There are lots of strategies for self-regulation that are built into the story that some families may want to try after reading. For additional support for It’s Hard to Be a Verb!, there is also an activity guide that is also available.
