An Australian koala and a California bear gently introduce children to the impact of climate change and offer everyday practices to help save both animal and human habitats.

Written in rhyme format, Bondi & Poppy Help Heal the Planet is a tender and sometimes playful conversation starter for even the youngest of readers, addressing the realities of global warming while offering hope and encouraging action.

Be mindful of waste, of not using too much

Like water and lights and paper and such.

Use your great brain and walk when you can

Talk with your family to make a smart plan.

Author Judith A. Proffer resides in Southern California. In late 2019 she left behind a particularly challenging fire season in Los Angeles for a three week holiday in Australia, quickly discovering that she had entered the country's worst fire season in recent memory. The region she spent Christmas Day that year (Kangaroo Island) was decimated by fire just days after she left. Bondi & Poppy is her response to the ferocity of the back to back fire seasons she experienced that year.

She is the co-author of When We Stayed Home (a tribute to how young children navigated big feelings and cheered themselves on during the upheaval of pandemic) and Broadway Baby.

Illustrated by award-winning artist Yoko Matsuoka.

Are you looking for a globally inspired climate change and environmental awareness book for a read aloud? Check out Bondi & Poppy Help Heal the Planet by Judith A. Proffer and illustrated by Yoko Matsuoka. The two most cuddliest and cute snugglebugs, a koala and a bear, have teamed up to talk about keeping their homes safe.

Using rhyming, Bondi & Poppy starts with the similarities in the habitats of the koala (Australia) and the bear (California).  It also shares the similar environmental dangers that each faces due to climate change, like wildfires. The illustrations demonstrate what the global community could do if they worked together to keep the planet healthy. Seeing the connection between the koala and the bear will help kids see that the experience of one is not necessarily isolated.

Educator Tips for Engaging Readers

Every other page has a call to action that readers can engage in. Here are some post-reading ideas:

  • A great activity to try with your kiddos, is to have them make a checklist of actions they find in the book. Then you can discuss how you might go about as a family or class community to accomplish those tasks.
  • Arbor Day is coming up on April 26. Share information and participate in planting a tree in your community as part of taking care of your planet. This ties into the main characters who as animals both rely on trees in their habitats.
  • If you live in a state other than California, draw a map together and illustrate it with famous things your state is known for that you want to protect. Pay special attention to the wildlife in your state.
  • Explore and learn about climate change
  • Develop a recycling system in your home and work together as a family to reduce the amount of trash you produce.
