Young reporter Frankie and her news crew of beloved toys learn why and how people protest as this engaging series continues.

There’s breaking news on TV at Frankie’s house—a protest to demand justice! Frankie’s mama, a journalist, gets a call to cover the story, and Frankie wants to do her own reporting, too. But what is a protest, exactly, and why do people do it? Along with her news crew, including Farrah the doll, Dan the teddy bear, and Nina the cat, Frankie prepares a feature story by doing research and conducting interviews with Papa and big sister Raven. And when the toys decide to have their own protest in support of the local movement, Frankie is on the scene to help make signs, march, and, of course, get the scoop! In this latest installment of the winning series, Frankie explores big ideas like racial injustice and activism with her supportive family and learns more about journalism in the process. Young newshounds will learn along with Frankie through all-caps vocabulary terms and a glossary at the back.

Has your child ever asked you what a protest is? Maybe they overheard you or another adult discussing the news recently. They might have questions about what a protest actually is and why people engage in them.

Frankie & Friends: The Big Protest by Christine Platt and illustrated by Alea Marley is a great book to read with young kids who have lots of questions. It will help them understand what a protest is and the reasoning behind it. It’s the second book in the Frankie and Friends series. Be sure to check out book one, Frankie & Friends: Breaking News.

Frankie is a little girl whose mother is a broadcast news journalist. Frankie has an awesome imagination. Part of that is playing make believe with her toys and pretending that she in a newscaster for her own news show. Through the use of play and imagination a complicated concept is broken down for children to understand.

I love the strong sense of family displayed in the book. Not only is Frankie’s Mom her role model, but Frankie’s dad comes in and participates in her staged protest with her toys too. There is a lot for a young reader to think about and learn from this book including building up their vocabulary as they read. The illustrations are fun too!
