Review:
The Me I Choose to Beby Natasha Anastasia Tarpley with photographs by Regis and Kahran Bethencourt is a phenomenal combination of visual beauty and lyrical words. This book embraces the limitless possibilities that are at our children’s fingertips. The beauty of Blackness, youth and the future are on bright and joyful display throughout the pages.
This book does the important work of giving us images and words that show all the potential that children have built into them. The images of Black and Brown children displaying this beautiful potential is reinforcement of the positive imagery that is often denied our children. In these words and photographs children are celebrated – their beauty, their culture, their hair.
Also, let’s take a quick moment to give absolute appreciation to the hair stylist(s) who created works of art with these children’s beautiful hair.
The images represent the past, present and future. The Afro-futurism representation is strong and I am here for it! Young black astronauts and superheroes for the win! The images and the text make room for our babies to dream and hope.
As a mom of littles and as an educator, I absolutely love this book for the message it sends our children. If you are looking for a gift for the upcoming holiday season, this book should be on the list. PERIOD. Give it as a gift to your own child, niece, nephew, godchild, your local school’s library.
