Book Review: The Yellow Bus by Loren Long
The Yellow Bus is one of those instant classics that after you read it, you sit with it for a while. When you read the title of this book, you may want to instinctively insert “school” into it. But that is the point of the title! You think that this bus is meant for only one thing, but once that time period is over, because all school busses get retired, we find that its journey is not yet over.
The Yellow Bus has a touching message, a reminder that just because something we thought we were meant to do is done, doesn’t mean that are joy and usefulness has to end. We can find joy in every part of our journey.
For young readers, this may also translate to them thinking about how they can find the joy in unexpected situations. As well as how can they be helpful to one another.
Yellow is often a color associated with joy. I love how the illustrations demonstrate the light of joy by contrasting it against the grayness of the settings. Those who are experiencing joy are in color.
This is a great read for both adult and young readers. I could even see reading this with high schoolers and having them reflect on the meanings of the words and illustrations.
