Arc Review

We’re Off to Find a Fairy by Cory Reid is a fun children’s book that celebrates diversity, imagination and engagement with nature. The story takes you on a very catchy rhyming adventure as a group of family and friends sets out on a quest to find a fairy.

I had so much fun reading this aloud with my kids which span from prek to 3rd grade. They each took a little bit of a different focus towards it but that made it fun for us to read together. While one child was busy trying to find the fairy, another was learning about the bugs and animals. Everyone wanted to play hide and seek afterwards!

The illustrations in We’re Off to Find a Fairy are beautiful and whimsical. I’m so happy that the fairy is Black because that is such a rare representation that Black and Brown children often get excluded from. Also a child who is in a wheelchair is participating in the adventure and I love that!

A few of my favorite things:

  • Love the representation of having a Black fairy!!!!! Woohoo!
  • The search group has lots of diversity with multiracial representation
  • The many possibilities for interaction with the text through looking for the fairy, learning about nature and repeating the rhyme in a read-aloud format

Here are some interactive activities that you can do with the book:

  • Play hide and seek
  • Go on a hunt for something you would find in nature and prepare for it by doing research and creating a visual sketch with notes first.
  • Go on a nature walk with a sketchbook and look for bugs and creatures to draw
  • Host your own fairy search with your school or neighborhood
