Review: Why We Celebrate Earth Day: Everything To Know About Your Favorite Holiday by Kelly Anne McLellan; illustrations by Javiera Mac-lean
This is the perfect book for an elementary reader who needs to do research on the origins of Earth Day. The chapters not only cover the purpose and history of Earth Day, but they also give you insight into ways you can celebrate it. I love the layout of the book because it makes it easier for newer readers to comprehend by using a combination of fun illustrations, highlighted vocabulary and brevity. There are tons of entry points into the book.
It is also full of ideas that kids can try with their own families. There is a whole chapter that includes activities kids can try. There are also examples of how people around the world celebrate Earth Day. The global inclusion is important because protecting the earth has to be a unified action globally. The glossary at the end is very helpful too. This would be a great resource for a homeschool curriculum and would also be helpful to classroom teachers looking for lesson ideas.
